Chinese radicals for beginners: the 12 most common ones

Chinese characters look complex, but almost every one is built from small pieces that repeat over and over — called radicals. Learn a few dozen common radicals and you'll be able to guess meanings, remember characters faster, and look them up more easily. Here are the 12 most common ones.

What is a radical?

A radical (部首) is a basic building block of a Chinese character — think of it as Chinese's "alphabet". A character usually has:

  • A meaning component (hints at meaning) — often the radical.
  • A sound component (hints at pronunciation).

Classic example: 妈 (, mother) = 女 (nữ, woman — meaning) + 马 (, horse — the "ma" sound). See the 女 on the left and you immediately guess this word relates to women.

Why radicals matter for Vietnamese learners

Hán–Việt readings help you remember the sound; radicals help you remember the shape and meaning. Combining both is the strongest way to learn characters:

  • See 氵 (water) → the word relates to water (河 river, 江 large river, 海 sea).
  • See 讠 (speech) → the word relates to speaking/language (说 speak, 语 language, 话 speech).

You guess the meaning category from the radical and the sound from your Hán–Việt vocabulary — a new character is no longer a meaningless block.

How to study radicals effectively

  1. Learn the ~30–50 common ones first, not all 214.
  2. Tie each radical to 2–3 example characters you actually use, to remember in context.
  3. Practice decomposing new characters: which part is the radical (meaning), which is the sound.

Tip: use the radical as an "anchor" to guess a new character's meaning, then look it up to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

How many radicals are there? The standard list has 214, but only about 50 appear frequently. Learn that group first — it's enough to accelerate.

Do radicals help with dictionaries? Yes. Traditional Chinese dictionaries are organized by radical + stroke count. But today you'll look words up faster by pinyin or handwriting on your phone.

Combine with the Hán–Việt advantage

Radicals (remember characters) + Hán–Việt readings (remember sound) + pinyin & tones (speak correctly) are the three foundations.
