An HSK study roadmap for beginners
HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is the standardized test of Chinese proficiency for non-native learners. If you're just starting, here's a practical roadmap to go from zero to your first HSK level.
What levels does HSK have?
The familiar system has 6 levels (HSK 1–6), from basic to advanced. The newer standard (HSK 3.0, announced in 2021) expands this to 9 levels across 3 stages (elementary – intermediate – advanced). Beginners usually start at HSK 1–2.
Test format and vocabulary requirements may change under the new standard — check the latest official information before registering.
A roadmap for beginners
- Pronunciation foundation: pinyin + tones. Learn the 4 tones and the neutral tone correctly from day one — wrong tones are the hardest habit to fix later.
- Core vocabulary. Start with the HSK 1 word set (familiar topics: family, numbers, time, daily activities).
- Basic sentence patterns & grammar. Subject–verb–object order, 是 / 有, measure words, questions with 吗 / 什么.
- Listen early. Use slow, clear audio and practice catching keywords. Pair it with shadowing to train listening and pronunciation together.
- Get familiar with characters. Begin with basic strokes and radicals. If you speak Vietnamese, use the Sino-Vietnamese advantage to memorize characters faster.
- Mock tests. Take sample papers to learn the structure, manage timing and find your weak spots.
Staying motivated
- Daily practice beats weekend cramming.
- Set goals by HSK level for clear, measurable progress.
- Combine listening and speaking early — don't wait until your grammar is "good enough."
